I finally made it to Oprah!! (Remembering Whitney Houston)

Tonight I will sit down with a heavy and hurting heart as I re-watch Oprah Winfrey's interview with my idol Whitney Houston. As reflect on my birthday in 2009 sitting in the front Harpo Studio I was so happy and honored to be there I tried to keep my cool on the outside but my heart was beating a mile a minute with pure excitement.

Although Oprah told us that Whitney would not be there I knew Whitney there was no way in the world she would not let a room full of her #1 fans down so I sat, I waited, I watched and listened to every word of that prerecorded interview and just when I thought I could not love Whitney anymore that interview proved to me wrong she was so honest, open and carefree and absolutely beautiful up there on that screen in the studio..

During the time I was sitting there an all of a sudden I saw out of the corner of my eye a small blue light it up and being an event planner and working with lighting I knew something was going on behind that curtain! Then I heard this very familiar cough and I said actually screaming to myself oh Lord Whitney is on the other side of that wall!! I didn't say anything to any one especially to my dear friend Noel who had traveled to Chicago with me the night before i knew she would really go nuts but I knew I was just a few feet away from my idol Whitney!

Then it happened Oprah announced "Whitney Houston!" I jumped out of my seat at that point all coolness was out the window and when I looked up there she was in all of her splendor, grace,beauty and glory descending the staircase to the stage was "The Voice" Ms. Whitney Houston and when she looked directly at me and sang and smiled I had no ideal that, that would be the last time I would hear her beautiful voice alive and in person up until February 12, 2012 sitting in my cousin living room with my husband I truly believed I would be at another concert clapping my hands, dancing, singing loud and having a wonderful time like I had done before.

Many people asked how did you get to go to the show??? Well Oprah asked for her fans to email them and tell them why are"You are Whitney Houston's biggest fan and how her music has touched your life" and I submitted my email the words I wrote that day was honest and open I was sharing my life as I think back now I hope and I pray that Whitney read my words that I will never know but what I do know is that I heard hers words.....

I had no idea how "I Didn't Know my Own Strength" would touch my life on Thursday July 29, 2010 less then a year later I received a phone call that changed my life it was my aunt and she was telling me my cousin had been shot and he was dead in that moment my heart was shattered and tonight it still is..... The pain I felt was unbearable I couldn't understand why someone would take his life all he did was go to the store to buy snacks for his daughters...... The first verse said it all and I will quote it here: " Lost touch with my soul I had no where to turn I had no where to go lost sight of my dream I thought it would be the end of me, I thought I'd never make it through I had no hope to hold on too I, I thought I would break I didn't know my own strength and I crashed down and I tumbled but I did not crumble I got through all the pain I didn't know my own strength survived my darkest hour my faith me alive I picked myself back up hold my head up high I was not built to break I didn't know my own strength. Found hope in my heart I found light to light my way out of the dark I found all that I need here inside of me."

Out of all of the things that have been said about Whitney I will forever remember her on that day September 2009 as the proud beautiful and talented woman that she was....

One of my biggest dreams has been to go to the Oprah Winfrey Show!! Finally my dream came true not only did I make it to the show on my birthday September 3 I also got to sit in the FRONT row and see my favorite singer Ms. WHITNEY HOUSTON for those of you who do not know I happen to be her BIGGEST FAN!!! Just by chance if you do not believe I was there or that MS. Are you ready for some Football??

Tonight the University of Michigan will be taking on Virgina Tech in the Allstate Sugar Bowl in one of my favorite cities New Orleans, Louisiana "Laissez le bon temps Rouler!"

Last summer my friend and colleague Kim McMullen owner of Something Spectacular Floral and Urban Fire Studio and I was granted access to one of places most men dream about and most (our husbands) said that we wouldn't gain access to!

None other than the Big House not only were we allowed access, we were allowed access to the entire stadium this is the part where football fans I suggest you hold you heart we were allowed access to the field and the 50 yard line...

You see Kim and I have done a few photo shoots for Best Wedding Sites Magazine Vendor Challenges and we wanted to do something different our color palette for the shoot was Maize and Blue and when I heard that I said to "Kim we are going to The Big House" yes we are partners and crime but no I didn't mean prison LOL.

This shower theme was such a hit the the one and only Preston Bailey himself featured this shoot on his blog among many this feature and his acknowledgement of this being a "Fantastic way of bringing the guys in" had to close to #1 as one of my highlights of 2011!

So this is what we came up with for the shoot at University of Michigan theme at the Big House!

Thoughtful Thursday: Reason,Season or Lifetime...

Over the past few days I've notice alot of people talking and Tweetin about how their friendships,vendor relationships are on hiatus.... Fortunately for me I have not had this problem so for that I'm glad however I have experienced it.

Years ago a friend presented this poem to me and I have shared it with many of my friends when they are going through difficult relationships and wanted to share it with all of you so you can understand sometimes it's not personal but relationships come to a end an you have to understand and recognize that:

"People come into your life for a Reason, a season or a Lifetime.....
When you know which one it is,
you will know what to do for that person.
When someone is in your life for a REASON,
it is usually to meet a need you have expressed.

They have come to assist you through a difficulty,
to provide you with guidance and support,
to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually.
They may seem like a godsend and they are.

They are there for the reason you need them to be.
Then,
without any wrongdoing on your part
or at an inconvenient time,
this person will say or do something
to bring the relationship to an end.
Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away.
Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met,
our desire fulfilled, their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered
and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON,
because your turn has come to share, grow or learn.
They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it, it is real.
But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons,

Thoughtful Thursday: A Prospective Client or Scam that is the question....

I'm thinking to myself I should've posted this post before now but at the same time it's better late than never especially in this particular case..

Whenever I get a notification that I have a new email from my website email I get excited at the thought that a Prospective client has contacted me to help plan an event for them besides from companies using that contact form to promote their business nothing aggravates me more than to get an email similar to the one that I received from Eng. William Steele and his Fiancee Susan Doddy on Monday July, 11, 2011 ( See complete email below).

You see I have been getting emails for this Phantom Bride Susan Doddy for years and it's always the same or quite similar details and it burns me up when one of my peers or former students contact me excited because they have been contacted by them with the belief that they have just landed a client and I have to be the bearer of bad news and tell them it's a SCAM!

Red Flags:

They do not send you any contact information.
They have a credit card that you can prepay for everything and keep on file
The use of poor English and grammar
If you make any contact with them they are very persistent
They can't meet with you until the day before the wedding or a few days before give or take
They only communicate with you via email
They live outside of the country and you can "Plan EVERYTHING about their wedding" (That has to be my favorite line I haven't met a couple yet to agree to that!)

These are a few of the things I've noticed and found to reek of the stench of SCAM however I'm sure there are plenty more as they are getting more and more craftier by the day !

Most importantly do not respond to any of this crap!

When I decided to do another vendor feature I knew it would be someone whom I know is truly working hard by educating and helping others. In the world of wedding professionals you have the opportunity to meet a ton of wonderful people from all over the country and the world and I have truly been blessed to meet some truly amazing people one person in particular Mrs. Shafonne Myers owner of Making Your Event Special and recently launched Pretty Pear Bride is one of those people the more I spoke with Shafonne and got to know her the more I realized that we have so much in common we are dedicated to helping people and when there is not a answer we will do whatever it takes to find one which is what she has done for Plus-Sized Brides!

1.Who is Shafonne Myers?

A wife to my wonderful husband Jimmy, a mother to my two kids, Saniya Alexis and Broady and a wonderful wedding, event and baby planner who is trying to make her mark in the world.

2.How did you get your start in wedding planning?

Well, I have always been a planner, I started in college as the person in charge of the group that did all the social events on campus. I then graduated with a Biology degree and went into teaching and then into medicine but always had my hand in event planning for doctors and co workers. My husband finally said it’s time you made money for yourself, so here I am.

4.Why Pretty Pear Bride?

The wedding industry is saturated with images of a certain body type but every bride doesn’t always fit that type so I have filled the void for those brides providing bridal inspiration to plus size brides. Being a plus size bride myself, I longed for the inspiration and visual imagery that represented me and my body type so Pretty Pear Bride is here to help fellow plus size brides gain the confidence and self-esteem to make their wedding day amazing.

5.You recently announced you also do baby planning sound very exciting

please tell us more?

A baby planner is someone similar to a wedding planner but for expectant parents. We are here to guide expectant mothers and parents through yet another chaotic and crazy time of their lives, pregnancy, child birth and the time after. We can do anything from helping with nursery design and baby registries to child proofing a home to providing referrals to high quality professionals. It can be as little or as much as you want. I have even had clients that wanted me to coordinate hair and make-up for after the delivery in preparation for guests at the hospital. We are there to help with whatever is needed of us.

6.What was your WORST and Funniest moment during one of your events?

Worst: having an officiant run late and just making it to the wedding with minutes to spare and of course as planners, we don’t let the couple know that anything is wrong.

Funny: Had a couple with a dog in the ceremony and he was coming down the aisle (outside wedding) and he decided to go relieve himself on the way down. Luckily most of the guests were dog lovers and knew this couple and the dog very well, so most people just laughed it off.

7. Who would be your dream client?

I would love to do an event for the First Couple, Michelle and Barrack or even the girls. It could be a birthday party or anything but to do an event for them would be great. And actually I would love for it to be a low key event because I would like to see them in a less formal setting.

8. What advice do you have for new planners?

Do tons of internships and mentorships, there is so much to learn from actually seeing people in action. Books and online education don’t compare to actually seeing things happen first hand.

9.Who and what inspires you?

My family!! I have an understanding husband, who allows me to do the things that I really want to do. Yes, he pulls me back sometimes, I can get a little crazy at times, but he is really supportive of what I want to do and achieve. And my kids are amazing. My son and daughter know that mommy has to work and even if I’m at my home office, they understand that even though I’m here I’m still working.

10. What do you want your wedding/event planning legacy to be when people

talk about you what do you want them to say and how do you plan to make it

happen?

I want them to say that Shafonne made a difference. She left her mark where people will remember her not for just what she did but how she treated people and how she was perceived by people. I am a firm believer of what comes around goes around, if you are mean and nasty to people, 9 times out of 10 it will come back to you. So I always strive to be nice to people and treat people the way I want to be treated and hope for the best.

Thoughtful Thursday: Do you charge relatives?

Being that I have been teaching the Wedding Planning Certification of the past few years at Macomb Community College I look forward to new an exciting questions during each new semester...

The one question I get asked a lot is about charging clients we all know that yes of course you charge clients a fair price for your services rendered but never once have I ever been asked "Do you charge your relatives? " As I was rolling my hair this topic popped in my mind and I don't recall seeing it anywhere so I decided to answer that question with a few of my own personal experiences...

For the past ten years I had been going to the same hair stylist in January she passed away and during many of the hours we spent together we discussed business and making it better and earning more money she dreamed of one day owning her own salon but one of her biggest complaint was that she was styling some of her family members hair every week and that they did not appreciate nor pay her it was something they felt she owed them because that was her profession however she also complained about how she was not making enough money and that she had to raise prices..... Think about this for a moment she was doing at least 4 relative heads of hair every week and not charging them well with each of my hair appointments I paid any where for $65 to $100 to get my hair done..So today I did the math if she had charged them at least $65 per head per week she would have made $260 additional per week and $1040 per month and $12,480 per year so after 10 years of me hearing this complaint she would have made $124,800..... I can't speak for any one else but I know that is a ton of money to just give away when you are in need of making money in an effort to make your dreams come true..

So I know now your wondering well Lisa do you charge relatives and my answer to that is a big huge gigantic YES!!! Everyone in my family clearly knows and understands this is a business and I have invested a lot of time and money into it like any other business owner in business you pay for services rendered I made this clear from the very beginning and in saying that when working with your family its up to you to keep it professional .

I meet with them like I would any other client in my office.
I clearly explain the services I offer
I explain my pricing they understand
I explain clearly my business hours (They understand I have business hours call and meet with me during those times to discuss business no it is not ok to call me at midnight to discuss something regarding your event on my personal phone line because you are my family member and you've had a brilliant idea)
Sign a contract and stick to it
I work just as hard as I would with any other client for my relatives
I explain to them when I'm working I have my work face on and I keep it professional so no busting a move or popping bottles at their reception, party or event for me or my staff.
Like with any other client I set guidelines and perimeters and believe it or not people like a bit of order and structure .
I listen and know that they are my relative I do not try to take over and think that just because I know them I know exactly what they want for their event I listen to them.
Finally last but not least treat them as you would any other client the same dedication,commitment and excitement you would give to a stranger give it to your family member that way they will respect what you do set boundaries and stick to it.

On a lighter note there are a few family members after VERY careful consideration and not wanting to live in the garage I do not charge ( my husband, my daughters,my mom and grandma)

Thoughtful Thursday: Cutting Wedding Costs

One of the first questions clients asks me is "How can they cut cost and save money?" and my answer is pretty much always the same the first thing you want to keep in mind the more guests you have the more money your going to spend bottom-line and then I break it down for them most clients don't even think about the extra cost associated with each guest their main focus is the per person cost at the venue or with the caterer..
I had a client that told me she wanted to only have 150 people at her wedding however she was sending out 170 invitations I explained to her if you send out 170 invitations you are actually inviting at the least 340 people how is that she asked I told her unless you tell them they can not bring a guest most people always bring a someone to the wedding so even though you only invite that one person they may RSVP for two.. Unless you tell them they can't bring a guest... She thought about it and she agreed that she would not send 170 and she didn't even think about it like that so if you want to cut cost first look at your guest list and decide is it really necessary to invite your entire department at work or stay within you budget and invite only your closest family and friends...

These are a few of the extra costs that I always find myself reminding them of:

Stationery ( invitations, programs, menus, maps,tags,labels etc.)
Favors and items to assemble (boxes,bags,ribbon,etc.)
Postage (Especially if their invite is over-sized or over-weight)
Linens (the more people the more chair covers,overlays,sashes table runners,installation etc.)
Flowers or center pieces ( the more people the more tables the more center pieces)
Gifts (Attendant & Parents)
Tips (for vendors)

On average you spend at least $100 per adult guest
$100 x 200 guest = $20,000 the average cost spent on wedding in the United States

Wonderful Wedding Wednesday: Make them Ooo and Ahh....

When I was a little girls I would go completely crazy over watching the Fireworks at Hart Plaza I was fascinated with all of the amazing colors,designs and display I anticipate every big boom and with wide eyes I waited for the burst of color and I would Oooo and Ahh so loud the next day I would be hoarse...I'm looking forward to taking my children to Hart Plaza to enjoy the Fireworks this year so why not add a bit of excitement to your wedding day and make your wedding guest Ooo and Ahh with a Firework display or to save on money how about using sparklers to give your guests to light to celebrate as you depart form your reception as newlyweds!

Go out with a bang and make them all Ooo and Ahh....

Tea Cup Tuesday: Cookie Bags

I was recently talking to one of my clients and she asked me what did I think would be a good wedding favor and I told her from a a wedding guests point of view I love to get anything that I can eat yep that's right anything that I can eat especially if it's chocolate!! So as I was doing some of my daily blog readings I can across what I think is one of the best favors or sweet selection I've ever seen the Cookie Bag and the best part it is completely edible and I have the recipe! Wonder how it tastes if the top was dipped in chocolate!
Here I give you the Cookie Bag:

Cookie Bags Recipe:

Ingredients:
Makes nine 2 1/4 by 2 3/4-by-4 inch boxes

1cup (2sticks) plus 5 table spoons unsalted butter, room temperature
2 1/4 cups confectioners sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1 1/4 cups bread flour

Cooking Directions:

Heat oven to 350 degrees. In the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with paddle attachment mix butter and sugar on medium speed until fluffy. With mixer running add corn syrup. Turn speed to low; add flour. Blend until incorporated.
Line an 11-by-17 inch baking pan with Silpat may ( a french non-stick baking mat). Pour 1 cup batter onto the Silpat; use a offset spatula to spread the batter evenly over mat bake golden brown and lacy, about 12 minutes, rotating once for even baking. Transfer to a heat-proof surface to cool, 1 to 2 minutes.
Using a scalloped pastry wheel, cut the cookie into pieces about 1 1/2 inches longer than height of bag; place mold on cookie sheet using offset spatula wrap cookie around mold and press seams together . To make the bottom of bag fold over hanging edges as you would wrap the bottom of a present. Let cookie harden on mold 1 1/2 minutes. Remove mold and repeat with the remaining cookie if cookie becomes to hard to bend , return to oven for at least 1 minute. Repeat the baking -and -folding process with the remaining batter. Store in an air tight container

I can't wait to try this recipe and dip my Cookie Bags in chocolate!

It has been almost 30 years when I woke up at the crack of dawn to see wedding of the Century of Diana Frances Spencer and Prince Charles Philip Artur George as a young girl I had no idea that watching this wedding is what ignited the flame for my love of weddings. So it was only natural that when their son Prince William announced his engagement I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that I would once again awake at the crack of dawn to see the new wedding of the century!

Most small business owners do not have several hundred dollars to spend on advertising each month and yes it costs that much especially if you want to do a print add not to mention the thousands of dollars you can spend if you want to do a television commercial....I've done both.

Oh my Feet!!!

How many time have you or someone you know or a complete stranger says the famous words "Oh my feet are killing me" I know I'm guilty of it and so are many of you but unlike some folks I'm not quick to kick off my heels and cut the rug on the dance floor for SEVERAL different reasons and most have to do with my health! I dont know about you but if I stubb my toe on the wall I'm out of commission for few minute...

So to give you an idea of why not to kick off those heels so quick think about this all the gross germs that are on the bottom of other people's shoes are transferred on the floor you a walking and dancing on barefoot and at the end of the night you put your shoes back on and transfer it right into your shoes onto your floors and get this maybe into your bed YUCK.... Or you could step on a piece of glass or just as you are about to bust your best move while doing the Cha Cha slide or The Cupid Shuffle you are next to the one person that goes right instead of left right on to your toes OUCH!! Don't cringe now!! Dr. Scholl's to the rescue!!!

Say it with a Nib...The fine skill of Calligraphy

I have always loved writing and the look of beautiful penmanship so it was no surprise that I have always had this fascination with Calligraphy my mother has some of the most beautiful handwriting and I have always tried to imitate her handwriting so when I came across one of her note books of poems I was absolutely awestruck not only was the handwriting beautiful but so was the words (I personally think she should publish her work not because she is my mother but because it is amazing she says no… )

So this year I decided I would learn Calligraphy and trust me it is a whole new world I had to learn what a nib was, spacing of letters, types of ink, the many different styles of Calligraphy, and when and how to flourish and not to mention the countless hours of PRACTICE!! My fingers hurt and I never had cramps in my hands until I took that class I had to learn to breathe as well as learn the pressure points I could go on and on but none the less I am so glad I took it upon myself to learn a new skill it has been worth every hand cramp along this amazing journey…..What next on my journeys learning a new language can you guess what that might be until next time…

We all have a one person in our lives that we share all of our secrets, hopes and dreams with well for me I have been sharing all of this with one person all of my life and when I say all of my life I REALLY mean just that...

I can talk to this person for hours upon hours when time allows we have laughed and cried together and shared many many secrets during one conversation she told me she "never had a birthday party" after being on this earth for 74 years I could not believe that my Grandmother my best friend had never had a birthday party so there was absolutely no thought about it there was going to be a surprise 75th birthday party for my Best friend!!

Planning this party was quite difficult not the actual planning but keeping a secret from the one person you tell everything for almost 8 months is NOT easy... During this time she wanted me to travel with her however; I had to tell her I could not go and she wanted details and when I didn't give her the specifics she thought I was "acting funny "

She vented to some of her friends whom was in cahoots the entire time and they had to also come up with things to tell her which at times frustrated her even more.. Fast forward so here we are down to the wire the party completely planned so this is how the week panned out....

Friday June 5, 2010:
My family and depart Michigan at 7:30 a.m. heading to Princeton, West Virginia (oh did I forget to mention the party was not in Detroit but in West Virginia)

I carried with me a two tiered birthday cake,table linens and chair covers for 110 guest, 10 dozen Cortozone long stemmed red roses in addition to all of the vases candles and anything else I needed to set-up for this party.

We arrived around 3:30 p.m. and I began setting- up the conference room at the hotel Finally around 10 p.m.my job was done however during the set-up Grandma called ( Has decided she is not going out with her friend because it is suppose to be a storm on Saturday!! WHAT pump the brakes this is the same friend that has been assigned to getting her to her Surprise birthday party!! Let the praying begin... She had no idea her entire family was in a hotel just 45 minutes away!!!

Saturday June 6, 2010 :
The Final touches had been added and guest begin arriving people traveled far and wide for (Michigan,Atlanta,North Carolina, Virginia, New York and California)to name a few!!
Now it is the final count down and this is what happened next...

SURPRISE!!!!

Welcome 2010 Today is the first day of a New Year"My New Years Resolution is...."

Every year we all take this vow whet er it be to lose weight,make more money or spend more time with family and friends it is something we all do and then worry and stress ourselves out if when don't accomplish everything we have vowed to do...However have you ever taken a moment to read the definition of the word resolution ?? If not I have taken a moment to look it up and this is the definition I found in the Webster Dictionary and Thesaurus for the word Resolution:

Resolution[rez-ol-oo'sh(o)n], act of resolving; analysis; solution; state of being resolved; fixed determination; that which is resolved.

As Professional Wedding and Special Event planners this is something we do for each wedding and special event that we plan,coordinate and execute.

We Resolve and make analysis of all problems of less than nearly perfect situations.

We find a solution when none is is sight.

We determine what is best for our clients when they are overwhelmed and can't make the decision for themselves.

So the next time some one ask me what is you New Years resolution I'm goint to reply "I am a Professional Wedding Planner and for each and every client I will continue to resolve problems,make solutions,determine what is best for them"

So don't stress yourself out if you don't lose all the weight as long as you are healthy, remember your family and friends know that you love them and sometimes to make more money it may require you to be away when you really don't want too so make the best of the time that you do spend with them.

2010 I'm all in it's all or nothing giving and receiving 100%...Not 50% ,9o%but 100% in family, love, life, friendship and business! Let's go!

Tonight another student presented her design board to the class for this particular assignment the students had to role play and interview prospective clients capture and display their vision unfortunately her client was not able to make it so she got me instead and if I had to redo my wedding I would be so excited to use the design she came up with for me and my dream wedding she was able to capture my vision as well as throw in a little flavor of her own !!

Tonight my students took their final and trust me they have worked hard to get to this point in the beginning there was a few hiccups however I worked hard to help my students whenever they needed me basically doing my job my reward will come when they receive their certifications or so I thought ....Well did they have a surprise for me....Tonight I was presented with 2 dozen long stemmed lilac/pink roses,a beautiful personalized business card holder,a gift set from Victoria's Secret and last but certainly not least a absolutely amazing water globe with the word Friends on the inside and the inscription

On Tuesday this week, President Barack Obama backed up his challenge to Americans this past February to take charge of our future by creating opportunity through higher education.
In a speech at Macomb Community College in Warren, Michigan, the President announced the American Graduation Initiative, a $12 billion commitment to strengthen community colleges that gear curriculum for the needed jobs of the future with a goal of graduating an additional five million people with degrees and certificates in the next decade.
Later that evening, students at Macomb Community College attending the summer session of The Wedding Planning Institute’s Certified Wedding Planner course met with their instructor Lisa Smith, owner of Gabbi Grace Events, to take charge of their future and continue their journey to making their wedding planning business dreams come true.

Design Boards

One the assignments the student had to complete was a design board this is a tool used by Wedding Planners to help bring a couples ideas and visions into reality using different fabrics,themes and pictures. The students worked very hard on their desgin boards and was nervous when they had to present it to the class but I must admit they did a FABLOUS job!

Last night was the monthly Association of Bridal Consultants meeting so I thought it would be a good idea to invite the students from my class so they could get the opportunity to attend an industry networking and educational meeting as well as meet seasoned industry professionals. The Meeting was held at MPE Event Production Inc. the educational program: “Different Brides, Different Budgets” Presented by Mark Ephraim of MPE Events and their staff they discussed working with brides with different budgets and they types of things you can do to decorate your venue from low end budgets to high end budgets.

I received emails from the students this morning stating that they "Loved the meeting and did not know that these types of meeting existed "and we all enjoyed the Shutterbooth!!

As a wedding planner you have to wear many hats and I am proud of the new hat that I am now wearing I was contacted by The Wedding Planning Institute to become one of their Instructors to teach the Wedding Planner Certification Course at Macomb Community College and I am very excited about this opportunity and I have a class full of students that are eager to learn and excited about this new adventure they are embarking upon I look forward to teaching them all about the wedding industry.......

Last night my husband and I attended the monthly Association of Bridal Consultants Meeting aboard the Infinity Ovation Yacht and I must say it was a beautiful yacht the food and entertainment was amazing the staff was great....I had the opportunity to see some friendly faces as well as meet some new ones and I must say my husband really enjoyed himself.

I am glad I had the opportunity to see the yacht I can't wait for the opportunity to recommend one of the beautiful yachts to my clients this will make for a truly remarkable event whether rain or shine.....

Oh no a Bridal Emergency !!!

We all hope for a perfect problem free wedding with absolutely no mishaps unless you are like my husband who made his groomsmen wear white plastic garbage bags over their tuxedos while the ate lunch prior to our wedding it is possible there might be a stain or two on somebody in your wedding party !!! In his defense he did not know better and he did not want anyone to ruin their tuxedo jackets or shirts with ketchup, mustard, anything with color ....

This is why for EVERY wedding I carry a well stocked bridal emergency kit which came in handy at a recent wedding the groom sat on a marker that was left on the seat of the limo and got black ink on the back of his white tuxedo pants !!

With the wedding season coming into full swing and you did not hire a wedding planner than it is important the someone in your wedding party have one here are some of the things I carry inside of my emergency kit I hope it helps when making your own ..

Last night I attended the National Association of Catering Executives also known as Nace annual Table Top Wow Competition. The meeting was heldat one of Detroit's finest gems... The Historic Book Cadillac which originally opened in 1924 the Book Cadillac has undergone a $200 million dollar restoration and re-opened it's doors in October 2008.....
Last night was made a little more special as Nace made a donation to the Lighthouse of Oakland County the Lighthouse provide services for families who are in need of food,clothing,furniture etc. I know first hand how important the services are that they provide in 2005 following Hurricane Katrina many of my close relatives were displaced and lost everything. With the services of the Light house and Red Cross my family members were able to get their lives back on track although it will never be the same as pre Katrina the services they provide was a GREAT help that was appreciated by not only my family but all the families of all of those who were in desperate need of help.

I was fortunate to meet a wonderful woman named Judith as we spoke and talked about the wedding industry and how amazed we both were by the beautiful tables and talents of all of the designers I learned she was actually the Executive Director of the Lighthouse so I was able to personally thank Ms. Robinson for the help that they provided and I was also able to give her an update of how the family they helped were doing she was excited to learn that they had indeed been there for my family and that we were meeting she will be traveling to New Orleans within a couple of weeks I know she will have a wonderful time and eat some fabulous food!!

For the past year I have been working with a wonderful couple and on Saturday March 28,2009 the couple shhh...Celebrated their first wedding anniversary with a beautiful wedding and reception unknown to many of the guests the couple had actually married last year March 28, 2008 in Canada...I Will be posting pictures of both the actual marriage that took place in Canada as well as the wedding and reception stay tuned this is truly a beautiful love story....

Normally if I am not working I like to spend my weekends with my family however I received an invitation to one of my beautiful brides to attend her bridal shower so it was really fun to have some me time for a change. The theme of the shower was Victoria's Secret . The bride purchased gifts for all of her guests all of which came from Victoria's Secret so that was a real treat. The shower was held at one of my favorite restaurants Sweet Lorraine's so in addition to great food, good games it was really a good time had by all. Thanks for inviting me Alethea I had a wonderful time...Count down to wedding four weeks to go !

The Southlake, TX, girl has been battling leukemia for two years, a battle that may end in just a matter of weeks. But what Jayla does have is a groom. He's her best friend, Jose Griggs, a fellow patient at Children's Medical Center in Dallas. "He is very cute," Jayla giggled, "And I love him."To prove that love really does trump all, Jayla and Jose recently tied the knot to fulfill her final wish: Getting married in a beautiful wedding, surrounded by family and friends.
"Will you take Jose to be your friend, forever and ever?" the pastor asked a tiara-topped Jayla."I will," she replied."We didn't expect to do this when she was nine years old," said Lisa Cooper, Jayla's mom. "But she has taught us all how to love each other and to be strong." The children aren't legally married, of course. In fact, the ceremony itself celebrated their intent -- to always be friends, no matter what. "Of course I was shocked to find out that her big request would be a wedding, but it was, so that is what she got," Tina Kirkpatrick, a planner with the catering hall, Paradise Cove, told ParentDish. Jayla organized it all, from the colors, menu (chicken enchiladas), cake and song for the father-daughter dance -- "It's Your Love" by Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. "She's already on morphine but I have never seen her look so good. She was shimmering."
As for Jose, "He's brighter, happier and more content with all that they go through in the hospital," said his father, Lawrence Griggs. "She changed that, brought it all out [and] opened up a side of him I hadn't seen." What the Cooper's are facing in the coming weeks is what every parent hopes they'll never have to endure. Wild Hibicus Champagne Jellies

The perfect, simple, very adult and absolutely gorgeous desert for your next event! Your guests will never know how simple this is & you will seem like an Iron Chef!

1 jar Wild Hibiscus Flowers in Syrup
1 2/3 cups sparkling wine (the half empty bottle of bubbly left in the fridge is a great use for this recipe)
½ cup water
5 gelatin leaves or 3 teaspoons gelatin powder
Whipped cream, dark chocolate curls & maraschino cherries for garnishing

Add sparkling wine to a mixing bowl
Pour ½ cup of the Hibiscus syrup (no flowers) into the wine.
In a small saucepan over low heat, warm water & dissolve gelatin. Do not boil
Pour into the wine through a sieve & mix through
Place a Wild Hibiscus Flower into 6-7 champagne flutes or fancy glasses & 2/3 fill with the jelly mix.
Refrigerate overnight to set (the flowers will set in all sorts of crazy positions)
Top with a whipped cream swirl, maraschino cherry (preferably with stems) & curled dark chocolate.
Tip: Curl dark chocolate by warming slightly & using a potato peeler, Enjoy!
Tip: Canned whipped cream will do fine such as dairy whip etc.

Not your Ordinary Apple!!!

As a kid I have always loved apples and going to the apple orchard so when I got the opportunity to take a class to create gourmet caramel apples I jumped at the chance...How could I not allow myself to indulge after all it included three of my most favorite things to eat!

I made these double dipped chocolate apples with caramel some with peanuts, cashews some swirled with white chocolate whatever my heart desire that is what I made for my 2007 Family and Friends Holiday Gathering and I must say they were a huge hit now this is not a project you would start the night before let me suggest at least a week each apple weigh at least two pounds .... So what if you pack on a couple of Holiday pounds that is what News Years Resolutions are for so go get those apples and indulge!!!! Yummy!!!

I love my job!!!! As a Certified Wedding Planner and a Member of the Association of Bridal Consultants I have the opportunity to visit some wonderful event venues at our last meeting on June 11, 2008 we met at the historic St. John’s Banquet and Conference Center of Southfield, is a beautiful private facility located in the heart of Southfield and until now, its best kept secret. Located on the grounds of St. John’s Armenian Church, whose brilliant gold dome has been a Southfield landmark for half a century, the Conference Center is the ideal destination for events drawing guests from all over the metro area. The magnificent 7,300 sq. ft. Grand Ballroom, completely remodeled in 2007 can accommodate between 200 and 520 for a sit down affair. Featuring exquisite French Doors, soaring windows and mirrors and brilliant crystal chandeliers, the Grand Ballroom at St. John’s is a spectacular venue for galas of all kinds. The weekend of June 6 th I whisked my husband off for some long needed and deserved RR for his birthday . I planned a surprised trip to the romantic Candellite Inn Bed & Breakfast in Ludington, Michigan . We enjoyed breakfast in bed , long walks on the beach, fishing and shopping .

The residents of Ludington were wonderful and made your feel as if you were at home we enjoyed lunch at a really nice BBQ restaurant Bones & Butts if you plan on visiting make sure you try the tacos another bit of information they fly south for the winter so if your in the mood for some good BBQ you might want to plan your trip for the spring or summer of plan to fly to Florida!!

This was our first and definitely not the last trip to Candle Light Inn the inn keepers Melanie and Tony Barnard were the absolute best anything you wished the made it happen ,chocolate covered strawberries,champagne, Dove chocolates on your king sized fluffed pillows and the food was absolutely gourmet chef Jacob was the best my husband and I have visited many restaurants from New Orleans to St. Louis but I must admit the dinner prepared by Chef Jacob was amazing with the help of Melanie I planned a romantic candlelight dinner in the formal dining room for Joseph' s birthday we dined on Caesar salad with fresh baked croutons, crabcakes, baked potatoes larger than a dinner plate, steaks smothered with mushrooms and onion never had I had a steak this tender and moist , shrimp scampi with jumbo shrimp and fresh crab meat on a bed of angel haired pasta followed by chocolate creme brulee and awaiting us when we returned to our suite chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle ofchilled champagne.

I always wanted to visit and climb a light house and I got the opportunity to do both in we climbed to the top of the North Breakwater Lighthouse the view of Lake Michigan is absolutely beautiful ................

Fortunately after attending a few industry meetings I decided to join The Association of Bridal Consultants (ABC) I chose ABC because it had everything I was looking for and more!!!! I am excited to attend my first ABC meeting as a actual Member. I encourage anyone in the Wedding industry to attend one of our monthly meeetings you will be amazed at all of the wonderful things you can learn and experience at one of these events!!!

I successfully completed and passed my final exam last week .......

Today I received my Certification and Distinguished title as a Certified Professional Wedding Planner from The Wedding Planning Institute. Along with the other students in my class we attended the November 2007 ISES (International Special Events Society) Meeting at the beautiful Charles H. Wright Museum in Detroit. It was a wonderful feeling to receive my certification in a place as beautiful as this and in the presence of seasoned event specialists who were there to congratulate us and offer advice about entering in to the Wedding and and Event planning Industry...I look forward to my new career and helping people make there special event one they will remember and cherish for a lifetime!

This is my favorite time of year for two reason Gabbi was born November 23rd(every seven years her birthday falls on Thanks Giving) and Grace was born four years later on November 30 ...This year we decided to take the girls some where special for their birthdays and we visited Castaway Bay ....They really enjoyed all of the activities and all of the holiday themed festivities they took pictures with the Peanuts Gang and Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoyed bedtime stories and disco with Snoopy and not to mention all the fun at the waterpark!!!!

I have always wanted to be my own boss so I decided that I wanted to start my own business with anything you do you have to research and do your homework and be prepared to invest alot of time and money .....I will begin my Professional Wedding Planner Certification course today and I am so excited I have been planning weddings and events for quite sometime mostly as a hobby but I no longer wanted to do it as a part-time thing I want this to be one of the top three priorities in my life (God 1st, Family 2nd and Career 3rd).
