June Wedding Flower of the Month: Rose

Rose is the birth flower for the month of June. The rose has many different meanings depending on the color of the rose. I did a blog post a few years back about different the meanings of the rose you can read about it here.

I would have to say the rose is one of the most recoginized and desired flowers by men, women and children all over the world!

The rose is available year round in a variety of colors making it one of the favorite flower choices of Brides and Grooms alike. Roses can be moderate to expensive when talking about cost because there are so many different varieties and colors to choose from most clients can always find a the perfect rose for their budget.

The above photograph was apart of a styled shoot that I designed along with my good friend Kim of Something Floral to see more of the amazing shoot read about it  on Brenda's Wedding Blog.

Be Nice to the Wedding Planner or You Might Get Burned!

The other day I had lunch with one of my past Brides during the lunch she started to laugh and asked "Do you remember the lady at my wedding that....?" Immediately I knew who and what she was talking about and I had to laugh it off myself you'll see why further into this post.

2009 I was hired by this Bride and her fiancee to be their full service wedding planner through out the entire process the Bride expressed to me how excited she was about her reception and how she REALLY wanted to enjoy it especially her dinner.... As most of us Wedding Planners know a couple being able to relax to enjoy their meal at their wedding reception is sometimes impossible this is normally the time where guests feel it's the best time to get their well wishes and one on one time in with the couple.

My clients  and I sat down and discussed in dept the reasons why they did not want their dinner disturbed and how could we come up with a solution to inform guests but also do it in a tactful manner that was not overbearing. I suggested to them that the DJ make the following announcement after the Blessing of the dinner " Please refrain from approaching the Bride and Groom at this time please allow them to enjoy their very first candle light dinner as husband and wife as they have had a long day following their dinner they will personally come around to each table to greet all their guest." Believe it or not quite a few of the guest immediately begin to say "I'm glad someone made that announcement because they need to eat...."

Well as to be expected there were a few that felt they were exempt from this request and like clock work started to approach the Bride and the Groom,  being that I had a job to do I politely reminded these guest of their request most respected it and moved on. Then there came the co worker who just so happen to have been late coming to the wedding, wore white and to top  it all off had the I will do what I want when I want attitude so I already knew what to expect with her.  She approached with her throw away camera in hand and began to reach over the table as I reached in to assist her she snapped "Don't Touch ME!" I said "OK but your sleeve is on fire!" and walked away....

You see another reason we decided not to have guest approach the table was  the Bride and Groom wanted a candle light dinner beyond their dreams and  had an elaborate candle design on their head-table. They did not want to give up their dream of an amazing candle light dinner this was their moment and did not want anyone to get burned... So to prevent this they asked me to politely ask the guest  that approached to please move on so they won't get burned by any of the candles on their table.

Now I can't speak for anyone else but when I see someone on fire my first impulse is to put out the fire but since this person didn't want me to touch her she ended  watching everyone else dancing the night away embarrassed in a burned and scorched white suit jacket....

So the bottom line is  please let us do our jobs!  If  you are invited to a wedding or any special event please be kind to the Wedding/Event Planner we are only doing the job that we have been hired and paid to do all the decision we make are based on what the bride and groom or the event host has asked us to do and we are the ones that know the reasons behind why something is or isn't happening. Please know that our goal is to make sure that our clients and their guests are happy, safe, enjoying the celebration and having the time of their lives!

Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy the Celebration!

May Wedding Flower of the Month: Lily of the Valley

Lily of the Valley is the birth flower of May the meaning of Lily of the Valley: Sweetness, return to happiness, delicacy and chastity it is also know as the "May flower" or "the Ladder to Heaven".  In the Bible the Lily of the Valley was mentioned 15 times most often in the song of Solomon it is also said to be the tears that the Virgin Mary wept at the Cross of Christ.

The Lily of the Valley is available year round and it quite expensive it has a very fragrant scent and comes in white and in a very rare pink the Lily of the Valley is not a recommend flower to carry as a wedding bouquet it is best used as a filler or accent flower.

Today the Lily of the Valley is also know as the flower used in the bouquet that Kate Middleton carried in her wedding bouquet when she married Prince William but before Kate Middleton carried them they were carried in the bouquet of my all time favorite bride and in my opinion the most beautiful bride ever and whom I named my little one after "Grace" Kelly also known as Princess Grace the American Princess.

I'm so excited the leaves have emerged from the soil and every year I look forward to seeing these flowers bloom in my flower bed hopefully any day now ... Here is a hint if you plant in your flower garden keep in mind that the Lily of the Valley is an invasive plant and will overtake other flowers and should be planted in containers or along a barrier.

Thoughtful Thursday: A Prospective Client or Scam that is the question....

I'm thinking to myself I should've posted this post before now but at the same time it's better late than never especially in this particular case..

Whenever I get a notification that I have a new email from my website email I get excited at the thought that a Prospective client has contacted me to help plan an event for them besides from companies using that contact form to promote their business nothing aggravates me more than to get an email similar to the one that I received from Eng. William Steele and his Fiancee Susan Doddy on Monday July, 11, 2011 ( See complete email below).

You see I have been getting emails for this Phantom Bride Susan Doddy  for years and it's always the same or quite similar details and it burns me up when one of my peers or former students contact me excited because they have been contacted by them with the belief that they have just landed a client and I have to be the bearer of bad news and tell them it's a SCAM!

Red Flags:
  • They do not send you any  contact information.
  • They have a credit card that you can prepay for everything and keep on file
  • The use of poor English and grammar
  • If you make any contact with them they are very persistent
  • They can't meet with you until the day before the wedding or a few days before give or take
  • They only communicate with you via email
  • They live outside of the country and you can "Plan EVERYTHING about their wedding" (That has to be my favorite line I haven't met a couple yet to agree to that!)
These are a few of the things I've noticed and found to reek of the stench of SCAM  however I'm sure there are plenty more as they are getting more and more craftier by the day !

Below is the actual email that I received :

One of my peers has actually communicated with these scammers and is willing to share her email correspondence with my readers if you would like to see the copies of these emails let me know and I will post them or send directly to you at a later date!

Most importantly do not respond to any of this crap!

Until next time beware of the Phantom Couple!

Fabulous Friday: Vendor Spotlight: Pretty Pear Bride

When I decided to do another vendor feature I knew  it would be someone whom I know  is truly working hard by educating and helping others. In the world of wedding professionals you have the opportunity to meet a ton of wonderful people from all over the country and the world and I have truly been blessed to meet some truly amazing people one person in particular  Mrs. Shafonne Myers owner of Making Your Event Special and recently launched Pretty Pear Bride is one of those people  the more I spoke with Shafonne and got to know her the more I realized that we have so much in common we are dedicated to helping people and when there is not a answer we  will do whatever it takes to find one which is what she has done for Plus-Sized Brides!

1.Who is Shafonne Myers?
A wife to my wonderful husband Jimmy, a mother to my two kids, Saniya Alexis and Broady and a wonderful wedding, event and baby planner who is trying to make her mark in the world.
2.How did you get your start in wedding planning?
Well, I have always been a planner, I started in college as the person in charge of the group that did all the social events on campus. I then graduated with a Biology degree and went into teaching and then into medicine but always had my hand in event planning for doctors and co workers. My husband finally said it’s time you made money for yourself, so here I am.
3. How Long have you been in business?
7 years
4.Why Pretty Pear Bride?
The wedding industry is saturated with images of a certain body type but every bride doesn’t always fit that type so I have filled the void for those brides providing bridal inspiration to plus size brides. Being a plus size bride myself, I longed for the inspiration and visual imagery that represented me and my body type so Pretty Pear Bride is here to help fellow plus size brides gain the confidence and self-esteem to make their wedding day amazing.
5.You recently announced you also do baby planning sound very exciting
please tell us more?
A baby planner is someone similar to a wedding planner but for expectant parents. We are here to guide expectant mothers and parents through yet another chaotic and crazy time of their lives, pregnancy, child birth and the time after. We can do anything from helping with nursery design and baby registries to child proofing a home to providing referrals to high quality professionals. It can be as little or as much as you want. I have even had clients that wanted me to coordinate hair and make-up for after the delivery in preparation for guests at the hospital. We are there to help with whatever is needed of us.
6.What was your WORST and Funniest moment during one of your events?
Worst: having an officiant run late and just making it to the wedding with minutes to spare and of course as planners, we don’t let the couple know that anything is wrong.
Funny: Had a couple with a dog in the ceremony and he was coming down the aisle (outside wedding) and he decided to go relieve himself on the way down. Luckily most of the guests were dog lovers and knew this couple and the dog very well, so most people just laughed it off.
7. Who would be your dream client?
I would love to do an event for the First Couple, Michelle and Barrack or even the girls. It could be a birthday party or anything but to do an event for them would be great. And actually I would love for it to be a low key event because I would like to see them in a less formal setting.
8. What advice do you have for new planners?
Do tons of internships and mentorships, there is so much to learn from actually seeing people in action. Books and online education don’t compare to actually seeing things happen first hand.
9.Who and what inspires you?
My family!! I have an understanding husband, who allows me to do the things that I really want to do. Yes, he pulls me back sometimes, I can get a little crazy at times, but he is really supportive of what I want to do and achieve. And my kids are amazing. My son and daughter know that mommy has to work and even if I’m at my home office, they understand that even though I’m here I’m still working.
10. What do you want your wedding/event planning legacy to be when people
talk about you what do you want them to say and how do you plan to make it
happen?
I want them to say that Shafonne made a difference. She left her mark where people will remember her not for just what she did but how she treated people and how she was perceived by people. I am a firm believer of what comes around goes around, if you are mean and nasty to people, 9 times out of 10 it will come back to you. So I always strive to be nice to people and treat people the way I want to be treated and hope for the best.
